Great Ocean Road

Getting to Adelaide Adventure Part II: drive the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide.

8am Great Ocean Road near Torquay

February 7th, we left Tokyo for Cairns, Australia (which Aussies actually pronounce “cans.” like cans of soup. cans of beans. cans of…you get the picture).

Cute Car We Drove

After customs (which was a joke – they basically just wave you on through with a g’day!) and a 4 hour layover, we were on our way to Melbourne (which Aussies pronounce “melbun”…or maybe “melben.” regardless you kind of just swallow the last syllable) to pick up our rental car, spend the night in the city, then drive one of the most beautiful roads in the world.

And that’s just what the Great Ocean Road is – one of the most beautiful roads in the world.

The Road

Built by soldiers returned from WWI, its a 243 km that hugs the coastline for the majority, only dipping into the rolling hills of the countryside for a few kilometers.  The whole thing is just stunning.  We were driving up the coast, from Melbourne, which is totally the way to go – since they drive on the left-hand side of the road, we were literally right next to the ocean.

The views were just too beautiful for words so just look at the gallery below:
